Staying near ExCeL: choosing your hotel area and planning meals

Choose your hotel around the day you will actually have: arriving at your event entrance, getting back afterwards and finding dinner that works for everyone. Compare Canning Town and the Royal Docks against those needs, rather than treating every hotel described as near ExCeL as interchangeable.

Start with ExCeL’s official hotel directory, which brings together accommodation options around the venue. Use it to build a shortlist, not as a substitute for checking each property against your plans. ([excel.london](https://www.excel.london/visitor/hotels))

Start with your actual event entrance

Before comparing hotel locations, find the entrance specified by your event organiser. ExCeL’s official getting-here guide distinguishes the west entrance, approached from Custom House, from the east entrance, approached from Prince Regent. That distinction should shape your hotel comparison. ([excel.london](https://www.excel.london/visitor/getting-here))

Check your ticket, joining instructions or organiser’s visitor information for the entrance and registration point. If these are not confirmed, ask before committing to a location mainly for venue access. Do not assume that a route ending at an ExCeL map pin ends at your registration desk.

For each shortlisted hotel, trace the route from its front door to that entrance. Consider luggage, walking preferences and any step-free requirements. Ask the hotel about its own access arrangements and the organiser about access at the event; avoid treating one answer as confirmation of the entire journey.

Canning Town or the Royal Docks?

Canning Town station has Jubilee line and DLR services, according to TfL’s station information. This gives you a concrete transport connection to test against both your event and evening destinations, rather than assuming Canning Town will automatically suit every itinerary. Area to investigate When to prioritise it in your comparison What should decide it
Royal Docks accommodation Your priority is the hotel-to-event journey and returning to your room between commitments. The actual route to your assigned entrance, plus a workable dinner plan.
Canning Town accommodation You want to compare venue access with evening plans around Canning Town or journeys using its transport connections. The complete hotel–event–dinner–hotel route, not just the station name.

As a hypothetical example, a visitor attending several early sessions might give entrance access twice the weight of evening travel. Someone attending one afternoon session before meeting friends elsewhere might reverse those priorities. Neither choice makes an area universally better.

Compare named hotels without assuming identical convenience

Novotel London ExCeL’s official page places the property at 7 Western Gateway, Royal Victoria Dock. Use that address as a starting point for checking your route, rather than relying on the hotel’s name alone. ([all.accor.com](https://all.accor.com/hotel/3656/index.en.shtml))

Premier Inn London Docklands ExCeL’s official page references Prince Regent DLR station in its location description. Compare that location with your assigned event entrance and evening plans; it is not an endorsement over other properties. ([premierinn.com](https://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/greater-london/london/london-docklands-excel.html))

Give each shortlisted hotel a simple score from one to three for entrance access, evening-route fit and confirmed food arrangements. Mark unanswered questions as unknown, not as a positive score. Resolve anything essential before booking, including room access needs and the terms attached to your chosen reservation.

Decide where dinner belongs in your evening

Sketch two possible evenings: event–restaurant–hotel and event–hotel–restaurant–hotel. The first avoids a separate return to your room; the second gives you a chance to change or leave belongings. Compare both before deciding which hotel location supports your preferred routine.

For a hypothetical mixed-diet party, agreeing on a workable restaurant may matter more than selecting accommodation first. Ask each person about their requirements, then discuss specific dishes, ingredients and preparation with the restaurant. Do not treat a dietary label as a complete answer.

At Zzetta, our approved dining offer includes Halal, Vegan and Gluten-Free options from one flame-fired kitchen. Review the Zzetta menu as a starting point, then discuss ingredients and suitability with staff. These options do not mean every dish is halal or that allergen-safe preparation can be promised.

Ask the hotel before planning food in your room

If you would rather eat at your accommodation, get the hotel’s direct answer about outside food before making arrangements. Ask separately about guest rooms and shared spaces; do not assume permission for either.

Suggested hotel enquiry: “I’m considering staying on [dates] while visiting [event], using [confirmed entrance]. Could you clarify the route from your entrance, any access arrangements relevant to [requirements], and breakfast arrangements for my planned departure? Is outside food permitted in guest rooms or shared areas, and are there any conditions?”

Make a dining enquiry, not a catering assumption

For a visitor meal in Canning Town, phone Zzetta on 020 3904 7074 with your proposed date, party size, preferred dining time and food requirements. Ask what can be arranged before building the evening around it. Exhibitors, crew or organisers arranging a team meal rather than a restaurant visit can use the Catering Hub for a separate enquiry; hotel or venue permission still needs direct confirmation.
