Beyond ExCeL: a Royal Docks outing and a meal in Canning Town

If you have spare time around an ExCeL visit, choose one waterfront outing rather than trying to fit everything in. A self-directed walk suits a break you want to keep adjustable; the London Cable Car is an alternative if the crossing itself is what you want to experience. Arrange a Zzetta meal separately, with your show commitments and onward travel taking priority.

This is a choice between two outings, not a timed itinerary. Decide what you can comfortably leave out before deciding what to add.

Start with the commitment you cannot move

Write down your next fixed obligation: a session, meeting, return to the show or departure home. If you intend to return to ExCeL, check your particular event’s re-entry arrangements with its organiser before leaving. Do not assume your ticket allows the break you have in mind.

Then work backwards, allowing room for the onward journey, any meal you arrange and an unallocated buffer. Set a personal cut-off for abandoning the outing. If the plan only works when every stage goes perfectly, simplify it rather than relying on a tight connection.

For a hypothetical visitor between sessions, that might mean choosing a modest walk and saving dinner until after the show. A visitor whose event commitments have finished could instead consider the cable car, subject to operating conditions and their final travel plans.

Alternative one: a self-directed waterfront walk

The official Royal Docks walks, tours and trails guide publishes waterfront walking ideas and self-guided trail resources. Use those resources to choose a manageable section rather than treating an entire trail as something you must complete.

Choose this option if your priority is deciding your own stopping point. Before setting off, identify your starting point, a proposed turnaround point and where you will head next. Check that the selected route actually supports that plan; do not assume every waterside path provides a continuous loop.

  • Read the chosen trail’s route information, not just its title.
  • Check current access information with the relevant route manager or operator, including any accessibility needs.
  • Check the weather forecast and decide what conditions would make you skip the walk.
  • Agree the turnaround decision with companions before anyone extends the outing.

Keep the walk optional. If conditions are uncomfortable, access is uncertain or your available window shrinks, stop trying to complete a route and reassess your next commitment.

Alternative two: the London Cable Car

TfL confirms that the London Cable Car connects Royal Docks and Greenwich Peninsula. Its official location and operating information also covers accessibility and weather-related disruption. Check current opening, accessibility arrangements and weather status with TfL before travelling, then check again before committing to the outing.

Choose this alternative when the crossing is a priority and you can accommodate uncertainty. Decide in advance whether you want to return to Royal Docks or continue from Greenwich Peninsula. Those are different onward journeys: do not plan your meal route from one side while expecting to finish on the other.

Ask everyone whether they want the experience before making it the group plan. Discuss boarding requirements directly with the operator where needed, rather than assuming a general accessibility description answers every individual question. If operation is disrupted or a queue would use up your buffer, abandon the crossing rather than squeeze the rest of the day.

Which option fits your spare time?

Plan the meal as a separate stop

For a meal at Zzetta, use the exact destination: 110 Barking Road, Canning Town, London E16 1EN. Enter your actual finishing point and this address into TfL’s journey planner. It offers departure or arrival planning and accessibility preferences. Check the restaurant-to-next-commitment journey separately too.

Browse the Zzetta menu to prepare your questions, then phone to discuss your intended date, party size and arrival window. Ask staff about ingredients and suitability for any dietary requirements, along with any access or luggage questions. Confirm arrangements directly; this guide does not establish opening hours, table availability or how quickly a meal can be served.

A useful phone enquiry

“Hello, we’re visiting ExCeL on [date] and considering a separate meal for [number] people after a Royal Docks outing. Our preferred arrival window is [window], and we need to leave by [time]. Could you confirm whether that is workable? We also need to discuss [dietary, access or luggage questions]. What should we do if our plans change?”

Phone Zzetta on 020 3904 7074 before making the meal a fixed part of your day. If you are instead arranging food for exhibitors, crew or an organiser’s team, use the Catering Hub for a separate catering enquiry; that is a different task from a visitor’s restaurant stop.
